Pour over immersion Dripper vs regular metal filter
I have my ideal pour over in general for all the beans , medium roast with 12 clicks on manual grinder, 89F water, 0.6 oz 3 rounds pour over to 9 oz 1:15 dtw.
I would like to see how immersion during the pour over process impacts the extraction of the bean’s original and roast flavors
Double shot espresso with different wet to dry ratio
Roast level | Medium to Dark |
Grind size | 12 clicks in manual grinder |
Dry weight | 0.6 oz |
Wet weight | 9 oz |
Water temperature | 89F |
Comparison | 3 round pour over, pour to immersion dripper first and then pour over to regular metal dripper, wait until the regular metal dripper done dripping, start the immersion dripper. repeat for 3 round pour over |
Expected difference | The immersion should fully extract both origin and roast flavor to make the cupping bold and complex. |
Goal of cupping | Understand how immersion during the pour over process impacts the extraction of origin and roast flavor |
Cupping summary | Fully soak and immersion drip creates balanced and smooth with fully origin flavor during the extraction process. I still do not know how exactly the immersion drip process impact the cupping result, after all, they are all the same amount of water flow through same amount of coffee ground. I think the time for the coffee ground soak in the water and drip out in a fast pace makes the cupping different compare with a consistent drip process. |
Immersion Dripper | Regular Dripper | |
Aroma | Nutty, buttery and fruity | more enhanced aroma than immersion due to the short contact of 89F degree water during the entire extraction process |
Look | more cloudy and lighter brown | clear and dark brown |
Taste | balanced , smooth with fruity sweetbitter | sharp and bitter, crisp compare with immersion Dripper |

04-06-2024 | Medium moka 0.3 oz to 6oz wtd 10 hand grind 60F charge vs room temperature | 60F charge should be less bitter and more fruit | as expected, o charge need to stay dry while contact with the metal could heat up the ground coffee , it will become easier extraction with all flavor washed out include the later stage bitterness. although aroma since more strong. both taste good coffee , smooth and fruity. personal peferrence , charge at 60F . |
04-08-2024 | cold pour over 1 oz to 6 oz wtd on medium to dark on manual 13 click grinder | crisp light flavor washed taste with bitterness | as expected, taste like water adding coffee flavor, not commanded |
04-10-2024 | Macchiato 032oz to 1 oz single shot, Brellive single shot portalfilter, grind size 5 vs 7 on medium to dark | 5 should be more balanced and 7 should be towards sour and crispy | not as expected, the 7 and 5 grind size seems not matter too much, both ran into the upper level presure of extraction, dripping and dropping indicate over extraction for both. 0.32oz seems too much for a single shot portalfilter. both tasted the same, towards bitter , still maintan to be creamy and bold in flavor, medium to dark may help to balance a little. |
04-12-2024 | 0.5 oz hand grinder at 10 clicks to 7 oz dtw, moka with 69F charge temp vs areopress at 89F | Moka should be bold but with all enhanced notes | as expected, but Moka seems over extracted with bold smoky bitter taste, Areopress has stronger aroma sweet and cheery, taste more balanced and smother , the looks of cupping are different as well, areopress has clear dark brown as moka is creamy but turbid. I think the grind size is too fine for moka pot . Prefered Areopress with 10 clicks (espresso grind size) |
04-16-2024 | americano medium to dark 0.56oz size 5 Briellve double shot 2 oz vs 3 oz to 10 oz americano | 2 oz should be bold , but bitter in espresso but more balance in americano | as expected, 2 oz in espresso with more bold in all sour and sweetbitter, 3oz in espresso is more original cheery with less sour and bitter and with stronger aroma on sweetness and buttery ,americano in another hand more balanced in 2 oz. the 3oz one tasted flat as water diluted the just right extraction. preference, 2 oz expresso with more bold body for americano |
04-20-2024 | americano medium to dark 0.56oz size 5 Briellve double shot 2 oz vs 3 oz to 10 oz americano | 2 oz should be bold , but bitter in espresso but more balance in americano | as expected, 2 oz in espresso with more bold in all sour and sweetbitter, 3oz in espresso is more original cheery with less sour and bitter and with stronger aroma on sweetness and buttery ,americano in another hand more balanced in 2 oz. the 3oz one tasted flat as water diluted the just right extraction. preference, 2 oz expresso with more bold body for americano |
